Interview with Sakurako Oidaira

EXISTENCE / ABSENCE

Interview with Sakurako Oidaira
1) What is your favourite quote?
Sculpture or painting is not a big deal. Trying is all that matters.
- Alberto Giacometti
I want clarity but I also want to have some sort of obscurity.
 - Jean Michel Basquiat
Beauty knows the art of enough. Savageness screams more and more.
- Samiro Yunoki
2) What is your favourite time of day?
Early morning, twilight and midnight.
3) What is your favourite place?
I like my home.
Sengokuhara, Hakone are among places I recently visited.
Paris is impressive too.
 4) What does drawing mean to you?
I probably just want to concentrate on doing something.
I picked drawing as a means to concentrate at some point.
I never thought I was good at it or felt comfortable doing it.
It is like this is the only thing I have and I will never give it up.
Then it becomes fun and enjoyable.
Assuming that I am a vessel,
I take in things unconsciously everyday.
When I realize what I see, what I choose, what fascinates me
and what it is trying to say,
my mind gets linked to a picture and my hands move.
It is important to keep the feeling fresh.
I take this process as I tend to get caught up in my thoughts,
but it should be ok because drawings done with my intuition
still include a lot of information you cannot just instantly realize
and they achieve the purpose once I tried.
Such drawings are sometimes surprising
and make me happy to think that this is what drawing is.
It does not mean they are unconscious or random.
I wonder if I could draw the lines
because I accumulated physical memory on the top of my thoughts
and all the drawings I have ever done.
My own small discoveries bring me to life and I think
that is all about creative expression
with the fact for the moment involving your actual feeling,
no matter how old I get or where I go.
5) Tell us about EXISTENCE | ABSENCE”,
the title for the upcoming show at Kasper.
It is hard to explain, but in this show,
I think I wanted to express the importance of each small choice we make.
It was around the time I often bought flowers
as farewell gifts or an offering. One day I stopped
by a flower shop by chance
and ended up bringing some flowers back home.
I placed them in a vase by the window and left the room
for a while to do something else.
When I came back to the room,
I saw them make a shadow against the curtain.
With a glance, I was startled and stared at them.
Then I thought I would not have had that moment
if I did not drop by the flower shop that day,
and wanted to express that imagery and scene.
Life/death can be interpreted as existence/absence
which also depends on whether I realize or not,
besides the fact of presence or absence.
Things that look like the other way
around could lie side-by-side or back-to-back.
All the things I want to express are fugacious.
Those who express live for a limited time too.
We do not stop creating even though
we know we cannot compete with nature.
Creators want to keep learning and those
who appreciate probably want to see them learning.
Although I believe that drawing is experiences
or conversations without language,
I used words to express my thoughts taking this opportunity.
I keenly felt the difficulty of writing,
but I had a meaningful time to face it.
Thank you.
