-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Anima uni
Anima uni

1. Tell us about what you learned before you became a jewellery artist.
Since I was a little kid, I always liked to stare at the realm of little creatures like ants,
mushrooms and pebbles...It was just wonder.
I majored in Biology at university because of my interest,
but one day I realized that Art would fit me better than scientific academics
which establish the world of knowledge by classifying and analyzing,
so I switched over to a career in Art.
While I was learning Fine Art at Goldsmiths in London, I travelled to a lot of places.
It was much later when I aimed to work on jewellery.
I wanted to have the skill to work with metals,
so I learned jewellery making at a night school while working during the day.
After that, I studied almost by myself and became like this before I knew it.
2. Do you like traveling?
Tell us about the places or memories that left impressions on you.
I like to just wander around and soak in the local atmosphere while traveling,
not doing anything special particularly.
I’m attracted to small things like the smell of the wind, a ray of light.
Sometimes I got to an unexpected destination
as if I was guided or an unexpected door opened.
Those unforgettable moments still sparkle in my memories.
Several years ago, I finally saw the northern lights in Iceland,
which was my lifelong dream.
Grey spindly clouds were wriggling quickly in the night sky above the town of Reykjavik.
I was very shocked when I knew that was it!
When the northern lights are strong, you can see wavering green or red colors,
but when it is weak, you only see grey things like I saw.
I also knew for the first time that the grey northern lights
still give off green lights through the camera lens.
Later on, explosive northern lights appeared through the night.
It was colorful and noisy like opal scattered into the night sky.
It was almost scary as if my retina would get stained.
I remember it was a very happy time during a trip.
3. What does the name Anima uni mean?
Anima uni means one soul.
Anima means soul in Latin. uni means one in Latin and also sea urchin,
members of Echinoderm, in Japanese.
It comes from a dream that I had on one night on a trip in the early days of my career.
In the dream, I was making jewelry under the name.
4. What do you want to express through jewelry?
I’m attracted to jewellery because it stays close to the outline of people.
It could be an intersection of people and the world.
I would like to make jewellery that could resonate gently and
support you like a charm when you make sure you are being yourself.
5. Tell us about the concept of the upcoming show at Kasper.
Kasper is the place I have been feeling drawn to since my first visit.
This time, it will be an exhibition of two worlds, jewellery and art.
There will be small three-dimensional works like repeating breathing in and out,
like bubbles coming out of both hands by itself, like cells,
or like stardust, and as an extension of that, jewellery which will be open like child’s play.
I’ll also bring a new collection of rings from Unini, a collaboration with Yayoi Ohno,
which are lovely, as if they come straight out of a fairy tale.

Interview with nakaban
nakaban
Dissonance is unknown harmony
2020.10.17(sat) - 11.1(sun)

Interview with nakaban①
(Dissonance is unknown harmony)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Interview with nakaban
1. What made you start painting?
I entered art school expecting something exciting like most young people do,
but I didn’t realize how fun it is to paint until after I graduated.
Some sort of formality in art made it difficult for me to fully enjoy painting.
I once gave up my painting career and had a day job,
but ended up cutting down on sleep to paint in my spare time.
One day before sunrise, I realized I might really like painting.
2. Tell us about a day in your studio.
I paint while listening to music I like.
I work half in illustrations and half in my own project.
I make coffee or cook something during a break for a change.
I have not read books or checked the Internet recently.
I grow a lot of fig trees.
3. How did your state of mind or lifestyle change
after you moved your studio to Hiroshima from around Tokyo?
Nothing has changed.
I feel like I basically live in paintings and words no matter where I live.
But, I think focusing on introversion leads to a way that connects to the world and others.
Hiroshima is a nice place.
It’s peaceful to see trams running throughout the city
near the river mouth of the brackish water region.
4. What is an important thing in living as an artist for you?
Not to make “art as work” mysterious.
I think everyone can be an artist,
so I would like people who see my paintings to think “I want to paint this”.
But I also think I need some energy to present that kind of work.
So I always think, what sort of energy it is or what I should do now.
5. Tell us about the concept for the upcoming show in Kasper.
I have done only a few,
but I am enjoying the production with the hypothesis that
“dissonance is unknown harmony”.
I have been trying to cut out the noise emanating from intentions in the show,
but it is hard. I am not a meditation expert.
When I am really into work, I start seeing relations between things.
Thinking of the invisible connections makes the world very picturesque.
