I was born in Sheffield in the north of Britain , at the end of the forties,
We were poor but good times were coming,
I spent my childhood going to hospital
For checkups for my lungs having had pneumonia when I was two,
I spent time alone with my dreams and drew and made things,
I was interested in the past, in books and such,
I was fascinated by Japan and it’s completeness ,
every aspect of living seemed thought about,
I have collected things and enjoyed the story they carry,
so when I was able ,I collected
Broken pieces of pottery from the river Thames and began to use them
in my work,
Making candlesticks fitted my connection with the past,
lidded boxes, drinking vessels,
Making for me is a diary, using found things ,painting ,
building up surfaces,using patterns and shapes to create something new
and personal but hopefully meaning something to other people,

私は１９４０年代の終わりに英国イングランドの北部、
シェフィールドに生まれました。
私の家族は、裕福ではなかったですが、明るい時代が近づきつつありました。
２歳の時に患った肺炎のせいで、幼少期は病院にいることが多く、
一人で絵を描いたり、立体を作ったりして半ば空想の世界で過ごしました。
その当時、本の中などにでてくる昔の事柄に特に興味を惹かれていました。
なかでも日本には憧れがありました。
何事においても、極みに至っているかのようで、
生活の様式全てに思いが尽くされているように感じました。
私は物を収集するのが好きです。物のもつ物語性にわくわくします。
それで自然にテムズ川の河川敷で陶片を拾い集め、
ある時それを作品に使い始めました。
燭台は私の、過去への興味と融合し、蓋物や茶碗もその延長だと言えます。
作るという事は、私にとっては日記のようなものです。
拾ってきた物を使い、描き、柄や形を構築して表面を形成し、
そこから新しい、私的なものを作り上げていきます。
そうやって生まれた作品が、他の人にとっても何か意味のある物に
なっていれば嬉しいです。
